A three bag reusable set costs about the same as three years of wrapping paper and lasts considerably longer than that. The real difference is on Boxing Day: fabric folds away, paper goes in the bin, and most Christmas paper cannot go in a kerbside recycling bin at all.
Why most Christmas paper is not recyclable
Foil finishes, glitter and plastic lamination are all common on Christmas wrap and all of them contaminate paper recycling. The scrunch test is the quick check: paper that springs back open rather than holding a scrunched shape has a plastic or foil layer and belongs in general waste. So does anything with sticky tape still attached.
The cost over five years
A household wrapping for four to six people gets through roughly three rolls a Christmas. Over five years that is fifteen rolls, bought fifteen separate times, thrown out fifteen times. A six bag reusable set is bought once and is still in service at the end of it.
What fabric handles better than paper
Anything round, soft, long or awkward. Bottles, footballs, cushions, rolled posters, scooters and soft toys are all faster in a bag or a cloth than they are in paper, and they look better.
What paper still does better
Flat rectangles in bulk. If you are wrapping thirty identical staff gifts, paper is quicker. Being honest about that matters more than pretending otherwise.
The tearing question
Children like tearing paper, and that is a real objection. A drawcord bag pulls open with the same rush and no mess, and the household that switches usually finds the novelty of the bag carries the first year and habit carries the rest.
Common questions
Do the bags come back?
Within a household, yes. For gifts that leave the house, treat the bag as part of the present or ask for it back at the door. Plain unprinted bags get reused by the recipient either way.
Can I wash them?
Cold machine wash on gentle, line dry. Unbleached cotton takes it without shrinking noticeably.
What about tags?
Fabric tags tie to the drawcord and get written on with a fabric pen, then wiped or re-used the following year.
